THE PEARL EXTRACT 7 - Raphaëlle, Amina & Camille.

31décembre

I - Introduction

We have seen in the other extract that Coyotito, Kino and Juana's baby, was stung by a scorpion. The scorpion is a symbol of danger and evil. Kino and Juana, frightened, decide to go to the city to see the doctor. But when Kino arrived in the medical center, the doctor (probably an American), didn’t regard Kino as a human being. It shows that there is a big gap between wealthy people and native fishermen: the doctor is unfair and refuses to cure Coyotito. Juana finally makes a remedy herself and Kino dives into the sea for oysters with his canoe inherited from his father. The canoe symbolizes life and it is their only money resource. He finds a beautiful pearl and all the community is relieved for him. He is hopeful and wants to buy a rifle (which represents power), a shawl for Juana, to marry her and to send Coyotito to school. The pearl may symbolize evil. In the last extract, the doctor finally comes to Juana and Kino's hut and Kino promises to pay him when he sells the pearl. Kino is now concerned with his pearl because he thinks that everybody wants to steal it.
