The strange case of the 1ere L at the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Show.

17février

Tuesday, February  1st, we went to see a new English play at the Alhambra Theatre
The play was an adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde."

This play was very interesting because the actors were really involved in their role. It was so funny to see that none of the teenagers in the theatre could look away from the stage.

The costumes and the props were perfect. And Mr.Hyde looked like a real beast. Amazing!

There's just only one thing I didn't really like.

Mr.Lanyon was replaced by a woman: Miss Lanyon, who will become the Dr Jekyll's girlfriend.

It's not the original story.

We saw two films about the play which presented all the important characters and the plot as well. They were a little funny because they were supposed to interest the students, and it was a good idea.

Review: THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE

17février

On Tuesday, February 1st, we saw The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the shortstory written by R.L. Stevenson adapted for the stage at the Alhambra.

First of all, the stage was pretty small so we felt closer to the actors (we could hear them very well) and closer to the characters (we entered the story right away).
The costumes respected the time when the story took place.
The use of the screen in the background was a good idea:  it completed the setting on stage and enabled us to imagine the environment. It also permitted to do a prolepsis with the voice-off which gave us information about the context.

Some characters from the shortstory were changed: Dr Lanyon became Miss Lanyon whom Dr Jekyll fell in love with and the lawyer Mr Gabriel Utterson became John Utterson. However, it did not prevent us from understanding the play.

In the shortstory, we see the plot from Utterson's point of view and in the play, we saw it from Jekyll's. In the shortstory, we know that Dr Jekyll is Mr Hyde only at the end whereas in play, we already know it at the very beginning and that was the most bothering because there was not twist any more so it removed all the suspense.

In short, we liked the play but we preferred Mirror Game.

Last Tuesday, we saw Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at the Alhambra theatre.

The actors were wearing clothes from the Victorian period, so the costumes were well chosen. A screen was placed behind the actors and we saw movies when there was a flashback or the transformation of Dr Jekyll into Hyde. We didn't truly appreciate this part of the staging because the films weren't good quality, it was a sort of “slide show” but it didn't seem very professional.

As for the comedians, they  were overacting, especially Ms Lanyon who had a strange accent. It was too theatrical. We didn't feel any emotions, we couldn't have any sympathy for the characters. That was too bad.

Furthermore, Hyde was breathing like a dog, it was unbearable.

Concerning the staging, the transformation of Hyde into Dr Jekyll was too repetitive, especially the sound of the broken mirror. It drove us crazy!

Moreover, in the book, we are not told (until the end) that Hyde is in fact Dr Jekyll but in the play we are. This choice didn't add anything positive to the play and destroyed the effect of surprise.

To put it in a nutshell, we were disappointed by this play but perhaps it is because we are not very interested in the story...

Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde... Hide yourselves !

Last Tuesday, we saw "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" in a theatre in Paris, but we didn't like the play for many reasons :

First, there was a screen, and the videos prevented us from focusing on the play, and that was a shame, because the other things of the setting, like the chemicals, were amazing.

Secondly, the public was really boring: the young people who were there were very impolite, and they were always speaking ( " Oh, a Werewolf !! " ) -_-'

Fortunately,  there were some positive points like the costumes, and the actors who played Mr.Hyde and the little girl acted very well. ( The little girl, Emily, was so cute !!!! :) She had a little voice, and she was singing !!! *-* it was beautiful ! And after that, we saw her sitting in the theatre with the actor who played Poole, and she was watching the play too. )

So, we think that it was more boring than "Mirror Game". Moreover, the story was not really the same as in the book because normally, we only know at the end that Dr.Jekyll is Mr.Hyde. So, there was no surprise and that, again, was a shame! Furthermore, Lanyon was replaced by a woman who falls in love with Dr Jekyll, it was a bit ridiculous -_-'

To cut it short, we didn't like this play.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

The play was very funny to see. There were some changes about the characters,  for example Mr Lanyon was Miss Lanyon, Dr Jekyll and her seemed to be in love and she finally died of a heart attack as Mr Lanyon should have died. The actor who played Mr Hyde was very mean and that made the audience laugh. The audience was receptive, in general. The main characters articulated well, so it was understandable but Mirror Game was easier to understand than this play. When Jekyll was turned into Hyde, Hyde walked through the mirror and Jekyll took his place and became just the reflection. The ambiguous link between the two parts of this character was shown in a very interesting way. At the back of the stage there was a screen on which  some pictures of the "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" movie were projected when there was something important to explain which couldn't be shown otherwise. The music was sometimes impressive . It wasn't too long,  I personnally  enjoyed the play.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

We went to L'Alhambra on Tuesday, February the 1st to watch Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, played by the compagny "Théâtre en Anglais".

The stage wasn't very large. There was a simple screen in the middle, and for each scene the actors brought props like a nightstand or some chemistry equipment. The screen  was used as a background : at night we could see the Moon and sometimes, little films were projected.

There were some changes between the play and the book. For example Dr Lanyon was replaced by a women (Miss Lanyon) and Dr Jekyll was in love with her.

There was always the same song being played : I found it too repetitive.

Even the way actors were playing was exaggerated, it was overplayed. I didn't really like the play, the way actors played bored me. It's a choice, and some people liked this kind of staging. But I didn't.  Forced laughter, Mr Hyde who looked like an animal.

In short, I found this play disappointing, but it was pleasant to go on an outing again with our class.

Disappointed

On Tuesday, February first a part of the class of 1erL went to The Alhambra in Paris to see The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, staged by Lucille O' Flanagan.  It was a show in English for  high school and middle school  students and all types of  audiences. It is a new creation using a huge video screen on stage. All the team was British and had already played  "The Importance of Being Earnest", "King Lear", "The Dumb Waiter" and "Sherlock Holmes"». The play deals with a mysterious and disgusting Mr Hyde. This mysterious man is known by nobody  but  Mr Jekyll, a respectable doctor.  But who is this Mr Hyde? All Jekyll’s friends are looking for the answer. Unfortunatly, it is too late because Jekyll has already lost the control of himself, of his bad side. It is the letter read  at the end of the play that will give its end to the plot. Is it possible not to be interested in such a story ? In man’s inner conflict between good and evil? You can be sure that the subject of the duality of man’s nature really pleased me, however I was disappointed by the staging and  the performance of the actors. The insane side of Mr Hyde was overplayed  to such an extent that he became uninteresting. The acting of the comedian made the  character funny. He looked like a dog. As for the very British comedian, she had such an exaggerated diction that she lost her credibility. The video extracts were badly used.We did not know any more if we had come to see a theatre play or a movie because  the contemporary staging was a total failure What a pity! What a pity  to miss the point in such a way  and not to be able to make us get into this wondeful novel.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde : the strange novel

17février

Tuesday, February 1st we went to the theatre L'Alhambra to see "The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". At the beginning we thought it strange because there was a big screen with the transformation of Dr Jekyll. The play was very good, and the staging very interesting. They changed the setting all the time, and it gave the play a better rhythm.

It was easy to understand the play because we had already studied the plot and the characters in class. There were different things in the play that you can't find in the novel : like doctor Lanyon who is a women in the play (and Dr Jekyll falls in love with her).

The character of Mr Hyde was very strange and scary, the first time we saw him, we were shocked by the horror of his face, he was so disgusting and so ugly!
Finally, when Dr Jekyll kill himself and die, we were relieved and still anguished.

It was very interesting, go and see it!

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - Review

17février

Last Tuesday, we saw the play Mr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Dr Jekyll is a scientist  who he invents a potion to separate his good side from his dark side. Mr Hyde is the dark side of Mr Jekyll. He has two friends : Mr Utterson and Mr Lanyon (but in the play the role of Lanyon was played by a woman).

We were very disappointed by this play, because the staging wasn't good at all, everytime Dr Jekyll was transformed into Hyde there was the same process : He drank the potion, the mirror broke and so on everytime...

On the stage there was a screen and the backstage was behind it. So we could see the actors who were moving. They changed setting every 10 minutes and it was totally useless because we understood perfectly well. without the settings where was situated the action.

But, the acting was very good, specially Miss Lanyon's performance. Sometimes, the actors were walking in the audience, it was very surprising.
