- What did the husband tell Mary M.?

- Is Mary M. really guilty?

M. O’Malley
You needed some help and asked me a favour two weeks ago. You wanted to know what a husband told his wife before she killed him. You gave me the names: Patrick and Mary Maloney. I did some searches about this couple, I met some neighbours, the strange doctor of Mary Maloney etc… and I eventually found the husband’s last words thanks to my Crystal’s Bowl !! I’m so sure this time ! Patrick didn’t say that he wanted to leave her; he was just speaking about the future baby’s room colour, about which the couple did not agree. So, to get calmer, Mary was going to take a frozen leg of lamb to prepare the supper, and at this precise moment, her state of mind changed because of the medicines that her doctor gave to her. She didn’t need these medicines, he was not a real doctor; it’s why she suddenly lost her mind and she hit her husband with the leg of lamb … just because of some pills. You know the rest of this sad story.

Right now, while I’m writing this letter, I’m thinking about one thing : Is Mary really guilty ? On one hand, she is guilty to have relied in this bad person , his doctor, an impostor; she is naïve, pregnant, it’s going to be her first baby so, maybe she was just afraid! Everybody can understand that feeling, so we could call that some mitigating circumstances. On the other hand, she definitively killed her husband and she cannot be forgiven.
Any way, good luck to the jury who will have to take a decision!
And if you need some help again, don’t forget… Natasha Clairvoyant will always be here for you.

Bye

- How have you worked on this project?

- What do you like and dislike about it?

Personally, I tried to think differently on this project, especially for the question “What did the husband tell Mary M.?”. It’s a cliché to think that he wanted to leave her, it’s too common and not funny. I prefer “to learn while getting fun”.
With the class, we worked on a role play and we had to imagine Mary’s trial. Each group showed us their work. Next week, we are going to realise a short movie about this trial.

I liked this project because it was a “moving” project, we had to form some groups, and listen to everybody, it was interesting, I like this way of thinking “together” but it was sometimes boring when people did not listen to each other.

Sacha 3°6

1°/  I think that Patrick had lost a huge sum of money in games or in bets and he and Mary have been in a bad time to have a baby because of money.
  As to me, we cannot say that Patrick said to Mary that he wanted to leave her because he said her in the most natural way what he said her. Afterwards he was also very nature when he said: “ Don’t make any supper for me. I’m going out.”  { he did not imagine at all what would happen ! }
Furthermore the subject of their conversation was not their love. They talked about money:  “ I’ve thought about it a good deal.. […] I’ll give you money.”
In addition, Patrick seems a bit desperate when he came back from his work, and I think when you think of leave your wife for an other you are not so desperate where as when you lost a big sum of money you are truly sad, disappointed ..

Guilty means that someone made a fault, a reprehensible act. In the case of Mary Maloney, she is guilty. She made lots of faults: She killed her husband, she manipulated the grocer then the policemen. Even if she was pregnant, she could not kill someone..

I truly enjoy the role playing. It was very original and funny and everybody found his happiness ! Besides everybody had his version of the fact: Why did she kill him? What did he say her? …  it is very odd the different versions.

Is Mary really guilty ?

Mary was completely exhausted by the fact that she was pregnant and also because she took medicines. I think that she had understood for a long time that her husband was unfaithul while she was expecting a baby and, besides, she was angry and sad because Patrick did not want to keep the baby.
According to me, the word "guilty" describes someone who made a mistake and especially who is responsible of one's act . So, here it's not really the case! That's right, Mary manipulated Sam the grocer and the detectives too, she was determined when she struck him with the leg of lamb on the nape! But as I have already said previously Mary acted without realizing what she was going to do! I think that after the crime it's was a reassurance for her like when you wake up in the morning after have done an horrible nightmare and you say yourself "OH, now it's finished!" .
So, Mary Maloney made the crime but she's not truly guilty and she must not go in prison but rather in a mental home just for a short time to recover from her emotions !

What Patrick told her ?

Patrick was not very chatty with her. He was very quiet probably because he drunk several glasses of whiskey! She tried to be kind and helpful with him but Patrick refused all the time what she suggested to him. For example: “I’ll get you some cheese and crackers first” and he answered simply “I don’t want it”. And then he tried to say her something, but he hesitated because he was going to announce her a bad thing. We don’t completely understand what he means but it’s sure that he wanted to leave her: “Of course I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after. But there needn’t really be any fuss.” And he added “It wouldn’t be very good for my job”. It shows that he is bored by Mary, and he wants to leave her. He knew that she was upset by his behaviour he tried to not shock her so much: “This is going to be a bit shock to you, I’m afraid.”

What do you like and dislike about this project ?

The text pleased me, it was not hard to understand it. We were in the habit of working on shorter texts, so I liked the fact that we had to analyse all parts of the story to understand it better. The role-playing was a very good idea because it allowed us to express our opinions even if it was more difficult for the defense because we just had to find migigating circumstences to reduce the punishment ! So, I enjoyed this project, but maybe that we stayed about it too long !

Lamb to the Slaughter a conclusion

Remember the questions we asked you?
Here they are again:

- What did the husband tell Mary M.?
- Is Mary M. really guilty?

- How have you worked on this project?
- What do you like and dislike about it?

Now is the time to answer them, but first watch Elizabeth Hultmans blog and see what the Swedish students have done on the same subject.

http://www.hultmansenglish.blogspot.com/

You can post a comment there too.

Now here are some of the Swedish students answers:

- He told her that he was having an affair.
-Yes, she did the crime and that makes her guilty.

-We have done diffrent versions on the text and then performed it to our class mats as a rollplay.
- It think the text is good and the fact that neither of us did it the some.

Maria Hansson

He told her that he wanted to leave her.
Yes, beacause she still killed him.
Read the story and made a play and recorded it..
The reading was quite lame and the play was okey.

Au revouir!

Daniel & Andreas

-That he was unfaithful
-No because the husband is stupid and he deserves to die...

-We read the text and made roleplays.
- It was funny and we did not dislike anything.
Bye

Not a bad idea...

It would be good if a post will be created about life and not the school. We could speak about what we like and post some pictures, like our pets (it seems that a lot of people have a horse), our sport ... Maybe people will write more

Our school and our spare time

Our first years studies at Akrahallskolan

We are Hannah and Ellinor soon we will both be 17 years old. We are going on Akrahallskolan at social science program and we have a lot of homework. On our spare time we are taking care of our horses and do a lot of studying. We live at the country side of Nybro so we have to take bus from the school and it takes about one hour for us to get home. We use to be home at five o’clock but on our short days we are home at three thirty (two days in the week). When we get home we are eating and then we have to take care of the horses (ride and clean the stable) that takes about two to three hours and then we have to eat again and then rest of the night goes to studying.

Do you have much homework’s to do at your spare time?

Our first year’s studies at Åkrahällskolan

Our names are Julia and Malin and we are 16 years old.

We don’t have much spare time because we have got so much home work to do. Everyday we put at least 2 hours on home work. We got many tests and term-papers, the last month we have got a geographic presentation, a history term-paper, two Swedish term-paper, a sport presentation, a math test,  a sport test and every week we got at least three mini test.

On the little spare time that we got we have different interests. Malin has 2 horses that she is taking care of and Julia doesn’t get much time to other

things than home work and her niece.

This is the picture of your school we get from your website

They seems to have a lot of things going on,  such as  le carnaval dans le monde. They have many blog’s about college. Even the teachers seem to have one. It is on France so we don’t understand a lot of it but it seems like a fun school.

Your website is not the greatest i’ve seen, you could need some things updated. My thoughts about your school is that its poorer than ours.

Are your school good on sports?

/ Fredrik Johansson & Edwin Sasezh

The school has got its name from a big and famous writer called Albert Camus. He was born in the early twenty century. They have a lot of clubs at the school for example theatre club, fish club and history club. They also have a lot of sport/activities on the school. The school has a collage for different things that’s going on at the school.

The French website is poor and looks like a spam-site.  We don’t like it. They should update it, even Åkrahälls site is more advanced. It looks like they have or had an exchange with Canada. It looks like they are interested in art and culture. They have a page about the schools history. The school has clubs and sport activities. We think they have published information and facts about the town the city is located in. The school must be more internationalized, there are no options to translate the page to English or read in English. But the site is made with a good spirit and a good thought.

About Lycée Albert Camus

First, I think that the school’s website is a bit old, but with nice colors. The website has a lot of information about the school and what they are doing. The school has a lot of sport associations and I get the impression that the school is sighted in science.

Are you able to chose a lot of what you are studying?

Hilma, Sp08B.

___________________________________________________________________________

The French website has a youthful profile. They have many colors and that makes the site more interesting and funnier to read. It’s a little too much sometimes. The text could be more divided so it’s easier to understand. The sound with the fish were nice J

What do you think about our website?

Malin and Maria

___________________________________________________________________________

The website is very nerdy with many colors and boring pictures. It looks like a primary-school. It doesn’t look like a website for a school. There wasn’t much on the English part. The good thing on the website was the old facts about the school.

Sweden and peer to peer downloading

AS the new anti-piracy law came into effect, Internet traffic in Sweden fell by 33%, it fell from an average 120Gbps to 80 Gbps. Amazing!

Will it be only a temporary fall?

Christian Engstrom Vice chairman of the Swedish Pirate Party says so: One of the reasons is that it takes people a few weeks to figure out how to change their security settings so that they can share files anonymously." He calls this law "a disaster" not just for file sharers but for Sweden as a whole.

"Dealing with illegal file-sharing is a job for the police. It is their job to enforce the law....Now we have given private corporations the legal right to go after our civilians. That's not how Western democracies work"

Do you agree? What is your opinion and what law is there in France to prevent peer to peer downloading?
