The Haunted Stone, by Monica S.

The Haunted Stone

It was  Winter in Exeter, the sky was very cloudy and the wind was blowing very hard.

During the Chrismas holidays I was at my grandparents’ house in Exeter, a city near

Cornwall.

I like Exeter because I have a lot of friends who live there. One day I wanted to go to

Dartmoor National Park with two of my friends, John and Jessy, because we had never seen it

and because people say it is very beautiful and impressive. In Exeter we had already seen the

cathedral of course, but also two historical houses: St Nicholas Priory and the Guildhall

and St Martin chapel, but we wanted to walk in the countryside.

So one day, in the middle of the afternoon, we decided to go to Dartmoor National Park, to

see Prehistoric monuments. We walked nearly ten kilometres, and then we were very tired so

we sat on a bench and we ate some bicuits. We spoke a lot and we didn’t see time pass. The

countryside was very beautiful. There were no trees, just purple heather and grass. On a hill

there was a circle of very high stones, and we decided to go there.

It was seven o’clock so

Jessy said “It’s very dark so can we go there another day ?” But John and I wanted to go that

evening and Jessy followed us.

When we arrived at the standing stones, I was very happy because it was the first time I came

there. But Jessy was very scared, there was nobody and it was very dark.

Suddenly John and Jessy began to scream... I turned round and saw something white, I didn’t

understand, I approched it and saw three men, but they weren’t normal, they were very

different from us. Their body was the same, but their clothes and general look were different.

Another “man” appeared ; he was younger than the others. He was wearing  brown trousers

made of leather, and a sort of hooded woolen jacket.

I thought they were prehistoric men, no they couldn’t be! Because  they lived here four

thousand years ago! So… they must be three ghosts! They could disappear when they

wanted and do a lot of things that humans can’t do… .Jessy, John and I ran very quickly.

We went back to my grandparents’ house, and we told them what we had seen at the stone.

But my grandparents didn’t want to believe us, they thought we were joking. Jessy and John

said that very seriously but they didn’t want to believe them.

My grandparents said: ”Tomorrow we will go to Dartmoor and if we see ghosts we will give

you one thousand pounds  each, if we can’t see ghosts you give us each thousand

pounds.”They were completely sure ghosts don’t exist.

The next day, they went to Dartmoor, in the same place, and they spoke for a long time,

suddenly they saw the three ghosts but when they wanted to run, the ghosts killed them with

their knives.

I didn’t see that but a man who was walking on another path saw the three ghosts when they

killed my grandparents. But he couldn’t do anything because it was too late. He told me that

and I was upset, I cried. And I thought : “why didn’t they kill  Jessy,John and me instead of

my grandparents ?”. In fact I think ghosts kill people who don’t believe in them.

That's why we say that sometimes it can be useful to believe in legends, myths, ghosts...
